Anyone child mind and have a dog?

Question:

Just wondering about this. Thinking of child minding again but we are planning on getting a puppy soon. I know it depends on parents but do you think it is an issue? Probably a stupid question.
Thanks in advance

I wouldn't send my children to a childminder with a dog sorry. I know loads of parents who would but personally I wouldn't.

Have to say I wouldn't send my child to a house with a dog either. All down to personal choice. If the childs family have a dog or cat at home they probably wouldn't mind though.

carrie2005 you have to take into account that a puppy is the dirtiest stage. They nip and chew not just toys but hands, legs etc. The only alternative would be to keep the pup away from the children. IMO it would be cruel to cage a pup or keep it isolated while you are minding somebody elses child.
You know I adore dogs but I'd hang back on sending one of mine to a childminder with a dog. Mine may be well trained but they may be a great childminder but terriable at training their dog.

Yeah, I agree with you all really to be honest. My friend minds a little fella and she got a dog recently and parents didn't seem to mind, but I think I would be the same as you all too. Puppy takes a lot of minding too. Even tho minding child is only one day a week, don't think it is fair on child or puppy.
Thanks for confirming what I already thought.

I agree with the others carrie, I would be reluctant to send the girls to a minder with a dog. Im super careful with them and my mams dog and we all know him so well.

+1. I'd be thinking about it from all angles, dog snapping, dog poo in the garden, dog hair on their clothes. Wouldn't fancy it to be honest.

Thanks girls. Have decided against child minding again, so not an issue now, but appreciate the replies. It just clarified what I already knew to be honest.
Thanks again

I am a part time childminder and have a dog and two cats!! My policy is my mindees do not come into contact with my pets at all.
The dog is an outside dog so is never in the house. We lock her up in her (very big!) kennel if the mindees are out the back. The 2 cats are not allowed in the house when the mindees are here, and in fact they know the rule so well now that as soon as they hear the parents car pull up at collection time they sit at the door waiting to come in . I dont see the problem if the children and pets dont mix. As regards hygiene my dog is well trained and 'goes' in one small spot which is hosed and bleached daily, more often during the summer if needs be.

I would consider it a bonus and definitely consider a childminder with a dog.

yes I'm a childminder and have a dog, it has never been a problem

I'm also a childminder with a small dog, the children love him. Where parents may not have a dog at home the children would delight in holding the lead when we go to the park and playing fetch the ball. Great fun for all.
