Waterford- Private or Public?

Question:

Hi Girls,
hubbie has just agreed to start ttc Yipeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!! Had my first in Dublin and went private- amazing consultant and would be so tempted to travel to see him, but in reality it'd be a bit nuts. So has anyone experience of Waterford and the consultants and whether to go public or private. I know I might not get preg for months but I did straight away with ds so would like to know, thanks.
Answers:
If you do get that magical blue line and choose to go private, I would highly reccomend Dr Eddie O Donnell. I had both my babies with him
Answers:
Can I ask you- does private really mean private or do you end up seeing a number of different consultants. I know with semi that that's the way it is but dh has heard that it's the same in Waterford practically.
Answers:
Well, my youngest will be 2 at the end of this month, so up to that point, private meant private with Dr Eddie. The only time I saw someone else was if he was on holidays. They would be standing in for him and I would see them in Dr Eddie's rooms. On those occasions (once on each pregnancy), I saw Dr Wesa who is also lovely!
So, unless things have changed since then....

I saw Dr. O'Donnell in Waterford too. I was public though and he was not at the birth or anything. He is very nice.

Has anyone gone semi?
Answers:
I personally can't speak high enough of John Bermingham - he is excellent had him on both births and made it business to be there - on the first occassion he wasn't on call but delivered my son. My husband and myself both formed a trusting bond with him.
OK he can be a bit flippant but he is a damn good doctor. And lightens the mood.
Answers:
In what way is he flippant- am intrigued? Did you have a section by the way? Thanks
Answers:
I don't know anything about Dr Bermingham, so can't comment on him.
Just to answer your query about the section... Both of my deliveries were c section. Emergency with my first baby and elective (due to med complications) with my second.

hi i also had my first baby in rothunda in dublin and 2nd in wrh under dr bermingham who i highly recommend i had complications in both pregnancys and received the best of care under him was doing combined but also saw him weekly due to my history. he was at the birth at 10pm at night and was not on call i also saw dr o donell when i was in and can also say he is a lovely person and a great dr also. all i will say is that the minute you get a positive you need to book a consultant as they only take so many patients for each month i rang at 5 weeks and odonnell and bermingham were already full but bermingham agreed to take me in view of my history said i was an interesting specimen. he does have a strange sense of humour and not everybody like it but i found him very funny put me very much at ease and by end of pregnancy had a very good relationship built up trusted him fully
Answers:
Just to clarify when i say flippant - i mean in a good way - he trys to lighten the mood - because on my second baby I was pretty anxious and when I leaving my dignity outside he was saying things be undressed and ready on my return. Just trying to make you feel at ease.
I was induced on both occassions overdue.

Girls, thanks so much. I will go for an elective section for the next one as I had one the first time so it's great to hear your opinions and thoughts.
Answers:
I had Dr O'Donnell when I miscarried..........yes he is lovely
I had Dr Stratton for my subsequent 3 pregnancies (although Dr Bermingham actually delivered my 2nd child) and I found him great. He doesn't say much but he is a fantastic doctor.
Good luck with your TTC xx

Would you consider going with the Domino midwives? They are just excellent. They give you such personal treatment and are just really nice and professional with excellent bed side manners. If anything is out of the ordinary then they will refer you to a consultant.
And the best thing of all is that it is absolutely free. I couldn't believe I got such an amazing service for zero Euro.

I had all 3 of mine in WRH. I went public and had all 3 of those consultants. Well, I was under their care. Never actually saw them, which was good in a way, meant pg was going well and normal.
With public, u can do the dominos scheme or the midwife scheme. I did the later on my 2nd pg, so I saw the same midwife throughout the entire pg and formed a bond. On the last pg, it was generally the same midwife, but not always. Although, if u are plannig a section, th edomino scheme is probably out for u! U get to leave hospital early.
I can't fault the staff in the hospital. I had straight forward pg and deliveries and the staff were lovely. The baby doc did have to be called as a precaution when DD was born, but just cos she had passed meiconium b4 she was born.
Even if u go private in waterford, u are not guarenteed a private ward cos if it's busy, u'll get whats available. I had a 2 bed ward last time and I was public. TBH I didn't see a point in paying for the same care u get anyway. Ok, u might get seen a bit sooner and get a few more scans or whatever, but the midwives still give u the best of care and attention.

I would be really happy to do the midwife thing but would be concerned as I will be having a section. I suppose that's something I would have to talk to them about. I went private last time because I have a rare condition that we weren't sure if it might effect the preg- it didn't so now I'm not sure.
Answers:
have to say the domino scheme in wrh is really fab and would love to have gone down this route and i would say defenately consider it if you can but i would say it is unlikely due to previous section. i like you had rare condition which is brought on by pregnancy and was even advised against second baby found all the care in wrh to be outstanding. the previous poster is right private beds are hard to come by and that did not bother me as nursing care is same public or private and i went private due to my rare condition hellp syndrome and previous eclamptic fit stayed for 6 days after baby 3 nights in public and 3 in private and same excellent care in both. my baby was in special care for fist 3 nights and i found the company of the other women great when i was worried .
